Playa del Matorral (El Matorral Beach) is a very long beach with golden sand situated in the far south of Fuerteventura, in the town of Morro Jable.

It is a long beach, around 12km in length, with clean waters and calm waves. Playa del Matorral is ideal for walking, sunbathing, swimming, or water sports. You’ll find deckchairs and parasols available on the beach all year round.

When we talk about Playa del Matorral we can talk about several beaches within one. Some areas are lively, others a bit quieter. In the north of the beach you can usually practice nudism, but not in the southern part. In some areas, there are several hotels almost on the beach, and in others, the beach is completely untouched. Some areas are more favourable for water sports, while others are better for swimming.

Close to the beach, you’ll find places like the Morro Jable viewpoint, with wonderful views of the beach and its surroundings, the El Matorral Lighthouse and the Saladar de Jandía wetlands.

Food and drink

You’ll find various food and drink kiosks spread along the length of the beach.

Near the beach, both on the avenue parallel to it and in the surrounding urban areas, there are several restaurants and bars where you can eat or have a drink.

Water sports

The Playa del Matorral is ideal for water sports. There are even dedicated parts of the beach for it. On the beach, you’ll find shops and schools for different water sports, especially surfing and windsurfing. If you are a beginner, you can take classes before taking to the water, and if you already have some experience, you can rent the equipment you need.

As well as the surfing and windsurfing equipment, you can also hire catamarans, canoes, and paddleboards.

Saladar de Jandía

Just behind the Beach is the Saladar de Jandía, an enormous wetland declared a protected natural area. Several communities of marine birds nest here and it is of huge importance for the endemic flora and fauna. It is the best representation of this type of ecosystem in the Canary Islands.

It’s recommended not to access it to help guarantee its conservation.

How to get there

You can get to the Playa del Matorral via the FV-2 road, which runs parallel to the beach and has various access routes. It can also be accessed on foot from the surrounding urban areas. It is well signposted, has car parks nearby and can be accessed without any difficulties.
