El Matorral Lighthouse

A lighthouse on the south coast of Fuerteventura

El Matorral Lighthouse (Faro del Matorral) is a lighthouse on the south coast of Fuerteventura and is emblematic of this part of the island. It serves as the most sought-after photo for anyone visiting Morro Jable.

It is built in a wonderful area next the paradisical and enormous Playa del Matorral. The exact place that the lighthouse is built is a salt flat of significant scientific interest, as it has been declared a protected natural area to sustain the islands’ coastal ecosystem.

The 62-metre-high lighthouse was built in the late 20th century, and since then has warned sailors navigating close the island about the shallow waters.

As the sun begins to set, the lighthouse and the colours of the sky create the perfect canvas, resulting in one of the most beautiful sunsets that can be seen in Fuerteventura.
